Dressing for Kayak Fishing: Essential Tips

What's up everybody, Jameson Redding here with Road Trip Angler! I was recently on beautiful Kent Island in Maryland filming an episode for TV, and I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to share some vital tips on how to dress for kayak fishing. But before we dive in, I want to give a special shout-out to our partner, the American Canoe Association (ACA). They've been instrumental in promoting paddling safety and education. Check out their paddling course for more great information.

Fishing continues to be a growing sport and with that kayak fishing is one of the fastest growing segments within it. This means every year more and more people are jumping into small plastic boats to chase after their next big catch. Most of us had no background in paddling or kayaking previously which can lead to a bit of a learning curve. How to control the boat, tackle management, and rigging can be key to one’s success. Unfortunately, some other elements are commonly overlooked until it is too late. One of those is how to properly dress while you’re on the water. This may seem simple but in addition to keeping you comfortable, which can extend your time out there, it can save your life!

The Importance of Proper Clothing and Safety Gear

Dressing correctly for kayak fishing is essential, and your clothing choices can vary significantly based on the weather. However, some rules are universal. The fabric you choose is crucial—avoid cotton at all costs. Cotton retains moisture, making it heavy, slow to dry, and uncomfortable.

The Most Important Gear: Life Jacket

Above all else, a properly fitted life jacket is non-negotiable. With various options available, prioritize comfort and freedom of movement. Try different styles on and, if you can, sit in your kayak while wearing them to see how they feel in your specific seat. Remember, your
safety is paramount, so always wear your life jacket whenever you're out on the water.

Before we get into the specifics of clothing, let's talk about the most critical piece of gear: a life jacket. Always wear a properly fitted life jacket. There are many options available, so find one that is comfortable and allows the range of motion you need for paddling and casting. A good life jacket is your best defense on the water.

Weather Conditions for Kayak Fishing

Now, let's talk attire. Dressing for kayak fishing hinges on weather conditions. Regardless of temperature, avoid cotton clothing, as it retains moisture and can weigh you down. Instead, opt for quick-drying, lightweight fabrics with moisture-wicking properties. In warm climates like Florida, lightweight polyester apparel keeps you cool and shields you from the sun's rays. Long sleeves and pants made from these materials provide additional protection from the bugs, but because they wick moisture away, they can keep you cool even in hot climates.

Warm Weather Gear

When fishing in warm weather, such as in Florida, where both air and water temperatures are high, opt for lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing. Polyester is an excellent choice as it dries quickly and keeps you cool by wicking sweat away from your body. Long pants and long sleeves made from lightweight materials can also help protect you from the sun without making you too hot.

Cold Weather Gear

As temperatures drop, layering becomes essential. A general rule of thumb is if the combined air and water temperature is below 120°F, consider donning dry protective gear to guard against hypothermia. Start with polyester base layers for insulation, followed by additional layers as needed. Investing in a quality dry suit provides an extra layer of defense against the elements, ensuring you stay dry and warm. Wind and rain can exacerbate cold conditions, so always prepare for the worst.

For cooler temps:

  • Layering: Use polyester layers, starting with a base layer, followed by insulating layers, and then a dry suit. Fleece or other tight-fitting insulating garments work well under a dry suit.
  • Dry Suit: Wearing a dry suit over your layers will keep you dry if you fall into the water, giving you more time to get back to safety.
  • Waders: In conditions where the water is warm but the air is cold, waders can be useful. There is a misconception that waders will cause you to sink if filled with water, but this is not true. To slow water entry, wear a wading belt and always pair your waders with a life jacket.

Footwear

Your choice of footwear for the kayak angler depends on the conditions:

  • Dry Conditions: If you’re primarily staying on the boat and want to keep your feet dry, deck boots like Xtratuf boots are great.

  • Wet Conditions: When getting in and out of the water, water shoes with good grip and traction are essential to prevent slipping on rocks.
  • Cold Weather: In colder conditions, neoprene booties over a dry suit keep your feet warm and protected.

Dispelling a common myth, wearing waders in cold weather won't cause you to sink. Instead, you'll achieve neutral buoyancy, especially when paired with a properly fitted life jacket and a waist belt. Adding a paddling or rain jacket on top keeps you dry and comfortable. This would not replace the use of a dry suit when conditions are cold, but it can be a comfortable way to stay dry when conditions are transitioning from cold to cool. Wearing your lifejacket and a belt can slow the water entering and feeling your waders if you find yourself in the drink. This will make it easier to get back to your boat or safety.

Essential Tips for Dressing for Kayak Fishing

These essential tips for dressing while kayak fishing, not only keeps you comfortable but also significantly enhances your safety on the water. Remember, the key is to wear moisture-wicking, quick-drying fabrics and to layer appropriately based on the weather. A properly fitted life jacket is non-negotiable—it’s your most important piece of safety gear.
