Discovering Montréal’s Winter Wonderland: A Tapestry of Experiences

Mount Royal

The City and History

Montréal's rich history is woven into the fabric of its streets, from the cobblestone alleys of Old Montréal to the towering skyscrapers of the downtown core. The city's iconic landmarks, such as the Notre-Dame Basilica, Chalet du Mont-Royal, its unique City Hall and the newer landmarks like the Bell Center, stand as testaments to its storied past and vibrant present.

A visit to Old Montréal offers a glimpse into the city's colonial heritage, with its historic buildings and picturesque squares. The Notre-Dame Basilica, with its stunning Gothic Revival architecture and intricate interior, is a must-see for history enthusiasts and architecture aficionados alike. Its cobblestone roads are lined with amazing restaurants and live music venues all steps away from the waterfront.

No visit to Montréal in the winter is complete without attending a Montréal Canadiens hockey game at the Bell Center. A great part of Montréal’s history is steeped in this ‘Original Six” NHL hockey team.  The energy of the crowd, the roar of the arena, and the camaraderie shared among fans create an electrifying atmosphere that transcends the sport itself. If you're lucky, you can even don some pads and play one-on-one with Canadien alumni.

Food

Montréal's culinary scene is as diverse as its population, with a tantalizing array of flavors and cuisines waiting to be discovered. From classic French bistros to trendy fusion eateries, the city offers something to satisfy every palate.  On every corner there seems to be Montréal classics where one can sample the legendary poutine or a Montréal style bagel.

In the eclectic neighborhood of Plateau Mont-Royal, visitors can embark on a culinary adventure, sampling everything from traditional Montréal bagels to Caribbean fusion cuisine. Kwizinn, a famous Caribbean fusion brunch spot, delights diners with its unique blend of flavors and vibrant atmosphere.

Meanwhile, the Le Central Gourmet Food Hall offers a taste of Montréal's diverse culinary landscape, with a variety of local vendors serving up delicious dishes from around the world.

Adventure

Montréal's urban landscape is a playground for adventure seekers, with a wealth of activities and attractions to explore.

Right in town is Mount Royal Park where you can enjoy snowshoeing with the view of the city scape.  Mount Royal sits in the middle of this island city and has plenty of woodland for you to explore as an escape from the bustle of the city.

Esplanade Tranquille in the Quartier des spectacles is transformed into a winter wonderland, with a dazzling light show illuminating the ice rink and creating a magical atmosphere for skaters of all ages. Meanwhile, Parc Jean-Drapeau, the site of Expo ‘67, offers adrenaline-pumping activities such as ice climbing, where participants can test their skills and conquer new heights under the guidance of experienced instructors.  If climbing isn’t for you, the park has snowshoeing, cross country skiing, sliding, fat biking and more to enjoy in the winter.

For easier adventures there are a few legendary hotels in Montréal with spa services and even some with rooftop heated pools for a unique winter experience!  The Hôtel Bonaventure has an amazing rooftop heated pool to check out.
