Kayak Fishing Life Jacket / PFD

The first thing to always consider when embarking on a kayak fishing adventure is making sure you have all of your gear. Among the essentials, the Life Jacket or Personal Flotation Device (PFD) plays a pivotal role in ensuring safety on the water. Today, let's explore the differences in PFDs, with a focus on types and styles tailored for kayak fishing. This will help you in choosing the right PFD for kayak fishing.

Types of Kayak Fishing Life Jackets / PFDs:

In the realm of PFDs, there are two main categories that I would use on the water. The Type 3 Vest, which has inherent flotation. The other is the Type 5 inflatable.

Inflatable Kayak Fishing Life Jacket / PFD:

The Type 5 inflatable PFD is a unique option. Triggered by a rip cord or automatic inflation upon submersion, it's crucial to regularly check the CO2 cartridge's condition. These PFDs tend to be a bit more comfortable however, I'd advise against using them in turbulent waters.

Opt for controlled environments like shallow flats or calm ponds where you are not as worried about going for a swim. The reason I recommend the Type 3 vest in swifter water is mostly due to the fact you are relying on yourself pulling a rip cord or a something that could fail. The coast guard requires that you have the Type 3 on at all times if this is the only PFD you have on your kayak as well.

Type 3 Vest:

Transitioning to the Type 3 vest, these already have flotation in place meaning that if you go for an unexpected swim, the vest is already doing its job and not relying on you are the cartridge to fire. I prefer these type PFDs in moving water or when I am in bigger bodies of water. While you are not required by law in most case to wear a Type 3 if it is in reach, I always recommend you keep it on. After all, it will not do you any good floating down river in your kayak while you are in the water.

Choosing the Right Fit for Kayak Fishing Life Jackets / PFDs:

The process of selecting the right PFD involves careful consideration of factors such as pocket preferences, back design, and ventilation. Trying on various vests, especially while seated in a kayak with a paddle, allows you to gauge comfort levels. Remember, the ultimate goal is to make wearing the PFD a seamless and enjoyable experience. Different designs may be more comfortable in certain situations. For example, the Chinook from NRS is a high back PFD, meaning that the flotation is higher on the back. This gives you more ventilation and with most modern kayak seats, it may put the thicker part of the jacket above the seat frame. The NRS Raku, on the other hand, has a thin back. This means that the flotation is spread across the whole back of the jacket but is significantly thinner. This is ideal for someone with a shorter torso with modern kayak seats.

Conclusion:

Whether opting for an inflatable Type 5 or a Type 3 vest, one cardinal rule remains – your PFD must be worn to be effective. Prioritize safety, plan for unforeseen circumstances, and hope for the best. Wearing your life jacket is non-negotiable, making it the most crucial piece of gear for any kayak fishing expedition. Let's keep the spirit of ‘fish on' alive!
