Pamlico Sound Fishing Guide

Hey everyone! I’m excited to take you on a virtual journey to one of my all-time favorite fishing spots: Pamlico Sound. Located on the beautiful eastern shore of North Carolina. I recently had the chance to reconnect with my buddy Eric Crause and our local guide, Captain Bryan DeHart, to dive deep into what makes this area a fishing paradise.

I would like to give a special thanks to Mossy Oak Properties Land and Farm Realty for sponsoring this blog. Find your favorite place in the Pamlico Sound area by visiting their website at landandfarmsrealty.com.

What Makes Pamlico Sound Unique?

Pamlico Sound is a stunningly vast estuary, encompassing over 3,000 square miles of water. It’s fed by the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers and boasts several inlets connecting it to the Atlantic Ocean. This unique combination creates a rich ecosystem that supports a wide variety of fish species. From trophy red drum to speckled trout, Pamlico Sound is a haven for anglers.

When I first started fishing Pamlico Sound about a decade ago, I was immediately drawn to its rich biodiversity and the abundant fishing opportunities. The seasonal patterns here are fascinating; for example, winter brings trout up the rivers and into the creeks, making for some excellent fishing from November through March. As the weather warms up, the trout migrate back out, and big drum fishing really takes off.

Key Fish Species in Pamlico Sound

  • Red Drum: Known for their size and fighting spirit, red drum are abundant, particularly in the fall.
  • Speckled Trout: Best caught in the early morning or late afternoon, particularly around grass beds.
  • Flounder: A favorite among anglers, flounder fishing is best in the warmer months.
  • Bluefish: Known for their aggressive nature, bluefish can be found throughout the sound.
  • Striped Bass: Known for their powerful swimming, fishing for striped bass often involves casting near rocky shorelines or inlets.

Local Knowledge is Key

One of the best pieces of advice I can offer any angler is to connect with a local guide. Captain Bryan DeHart has lived in the Manteo area his entire life, and he knows the ins and outs of Pamlico Sound like the back of his hand. His expertise was invaluable as we explored the shoreline. We were casting into spots where bait was jumping and birds were diving—classic signs of an active fishery. Captain DeHart recommends using Rainshadow Rod Blanks and building a custom trout rod for fishing Pamlico Sound.

During our time out on the water, I was reminded of how important it is to really observe the environment around you. Sometimes, the water will tell you where the fish are hiding. Even on days when we hadn’t yet caught anything, I felt that unmistakable excitement that comes from knowing you’re in a productive area.

The Fishing Experience

We set out early in the morning, eager to hit the outer shoreline of Pamlico Sound. The tranquility of the sound was mesmerizing, and as we drifted along, we experimented with different fishing techniques. Topwater fishing is a favorite of mine, especially when targeting speckled trout and redfish. The thrill of seeing a fish explode on your lure is unmatched!

Tips for Fishing in Pamlico Sound

  • Licensing: Ensure you have the proper fishing licenses, which can be obtained online or at local tackle shops.
  • Local Regulations: Familiarize yourself with local fishing regulations, including size and bag limits.
  • Weather Considerations: Check weather conditions before heading out; storms can arise quickly.
  • Local Guides: Consider hiring a local fishing guide to enhance your experience and increase your chances of a successful catch.

Variety of Fishing Setups Used Through the Day

We employed various setups throughout the day. We were using popping corks, jigs, and topwater lures to see what the fish were interested in. Top water baits like the Spook Jr. worked well early in the morning and late in the day while soft plastic shrimp imitations under a popping cork seemed to entice the bite best when the sun became higher in the sky. Jig, soft plastic swim baits like the Z-Man Diezel Minnowz rigged on a 1/8 oz jig head, also performed well for the speckled and grey trout.
