Best Hiking Shorts: Hike Farther, Feel Fresher

Now that we're in the peak of the summer heat, I thought we should talk about hiking shorts! When the weather calls for it, nothing beats a trustee pair of shorts to keep the breeze flowing and that range of motion on-point. As with most backpacking gear, there can be a pretty impressive price range, and so I thought I would highlight different options for different budgets. Here are five of my favorite go-tos for when the sweat starts pouring.

Wearfirst River Cargo Shorts

First up is this $29 (USD), Wal-mart special: the River Cargo Short by Wearfirst. I picked these guys up 6 months ago and they have held up surprisingly well for such an inexpensive pair. It's not the most technical design I've ever seen, but they do have a 25% nylon blend (75% cotton) so there is some moisture-wicking on top of the solid breathability.

Another thing I appreciate about the River Cargo Short is that it has an integrated belt that can't be pulled out (a common frustration when it comes to athletic pants/shorts). Plus, a slender, built-in belt works way better in the wild than a fat, add-on one. I find it stays clear of my pack, rather than rubbing and catching in annoying ways. These shorts are also slim and minimal, with just a couple of zipper-pockets to keep you going.

Outdoor Research Ferrosi Short

I recently did a video all about great hiking pants in which I raved about the Ferrosi. Well, the shorts stay true to the trend. And I was pleased to see that they still rang in at a reasonable $52 (USD). The back pockets don't use zippers or velcro, instead they keep the trunk dumps nice and casual and then provide a zippered thigh pocket to secure things like lighters, a pocket knife, moolah, etc.

The Ferrosi is moisture-wicking, and they even added a soft liner for the waistband. Nice touch! One thing to note, these shorts do ride up a smidge, so hopefully you like showing off those creamy quads!

REI Sahara Cargo Shorts

Cargo shorts/pants can be a polarizing category. I'm not historically the biggest cargo fan, but I've already given a shout-out to the Wearfirst pair, and when I did the video on hiking pants, I saw a lot of comments from people wondering where the cargos were. Well, cargo option #2 coming at you from REI.

The Sahara shorts feature beefy pockets, one has a zipper for extra security, and one just has an open-flap for easier, one-hand-access. This pair also has an elastic waistband. So if you get the right fit, you probably won't need to worry about a belt. The Sahara still doesn't break the bank – coming in at $58 (USD). For my money, anything under 60 bucks is always great to see.

Kuhl Renegade Shorts

If you're ready to drop some coin on shorts, then the Renegade from Kuhl will be $75 (USD) well-spent. This is a do-it-all type of short. They're certainly the most technical option that we've looked at yet. The Renegade is quick-drying, nice and durable, and ready for the backcountry or some adventure travel.

The pockets are a mix of velcro, large-zippered, and slick, open-concept, depending on what you need. What else can I say other than…ahh I can't help myself, these shorts are really cool!

Gainmaker Running Shorts from Saxx

Totally. In fact, the last pair on my list today is specifically designed for running. The Gainmaker Shorts from Saxx have their built-in BallPark Pouch/liner, which for anyone familiar with the men's-geared products of this hilariously named brand knows they can't be beat. Since these shorts are made for high-intensity activity, they're that much more light and breezy while hiking around.

Living in Arizona, I especially gravitate towards the Gainmaker on a hot day. And again, no need to worry about the belt since these already have an elastic waistband and the classic, running shorts drawstring. At $78 (USD), this is the most-expensive option from my fav-five, but you also get multiple uses out of these. So don't be afraid of busting out a pair of running shorts or other performance athletic shorts for those serious hikes. If the conditions are nice, you'll really appreciate the extra breathability.

So there is my short and sweet list of sweet shorts. Regardless of your budget, you should be able to find something to suit your fancy, cement those tan lines, show off your jacked hiking calves and just all-around improve your summertime backpacking experience.
